Purifying your body and mind: an Ayurvedic detox for summer's end

In Ayurveda, the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) are believed to govern the body's physical and mental functions. Each dosha has specific characteristics and attributes, and an imbalance in any of the doshas can lead to physical and mental symptoms.

Summer is associated with the Pitta dosha, which governs metabolism, digestion, and other processes that regulate heat in the body. As summer comes to a close, many of us are feeling the effects of long, hot days. Excess of heat, or pitta in the body that can accumulate over the summer months, can manifest in a number of ways, including impacting our physical health, as well as our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Excess heat in the body can manifest physically as:

  1. Digestive issues such as indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn, and bloating

  2. Skin rashes, breakouts, and irritations.

  3. Joint pain, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions

  4. Pitta governs the body's metabolic processes, so can lead to overheat and excessive sweating

Excess heat can also disrupt the mental, emotional and spiritual bodes:

  1. Irritability and frustration

  2. Trouble sleeping or staying asleep

  3. Nervousness, restlessness and anxiety

  4. As pitta governs our drive and determination, it can lead to impatience and a tendency to push too hard, leading to burnout

  5. A critical and judgmental attitude towards self and others

  6. A sense of dissatisfaction or unfulfilled desires

The end of summer represents the seasonal change to Autumn. Autumn is associated with the Vata dosha, which governs movement and is characterised by qualities such as dryness, coldness, and lightness. The changing season and dry, windy autumn weather can cause an increase in Vata, and may manifest as dry skin, constipation, joint pain, difficulty sleeping and anxiety.

Detoxification during summer is essential, as it purifies the body and eliminates impurities, creating balance in the doshas.
